About the Telephone
Remember, not so long ago, when the telephone used to be a simple receiver connected by a wire to the wall? And all you used your phone for was to make a phone call? Today, new technology has changed the telephone and what people use it for.
Computer-based technology has given us instant connections and clearer conversations over the telephone. Nowadays, people use telephones to do their banking, to rent videos, and buy things. People use their telephones to connect their home computers to computerized information centres. People also send letters and documents through phone lines by fax. And new systems may be available shortly for sending video pictures over the telephone.
But you don't need to be at home or at the office to use the telephone anymore. Mobile phones (also known as cellular phones) have no wires. You can carry one in your pocket or keep one in your car. A call from a mobile phone travels along radio waves to stations located in different places. From there, the radio signal is connected to the regular phone system. With a mobile phone, anyone can drive, phone and talk at the same time. This means less wasted time: you don't have to look for a phone booth or use coins to make a call. So remember, next time you are at the beach or riding your bicycle, there might be a call for you.

The Bridge
Peter's parents died when he was a child of five. He was brought up by his grandmother who took great care of the child and did her best to make him happy.
When Peter left school it was decided that he should start working as by that time his grandmother had become an old woman and it was difficult for her to work. Peter's grandmother thought that he should master some trade and at the same time study at an evening faculty. That was why she suggested that he should go to Siberia where they had some acquaintances who could help Peter to begin a new life. Though Peter agreed to her proposal, he did it without any enthusiasm as he was shy by nature and he couldn't imagine his life without his grandmother.
A few days before his departure Peter made up his mind to see all the places where he had spent his childhood. So he took his bicycle and soon found himself far from his native village. Suddenly he saw another cyclist in the distance. He decided to overtake the cyclist and rode faster. Soon he could see that the cyclist was a young girl. As soon as the girl noticed Peter she increased her speed as she didn't want Peter to catch up with her. Suddenly Peter remembered that a few yards ahead of them there was no road as the bridge across the river was under repairs. Peter realized that the girl would run a terrible risk in case she tried to cross the bridge. He cried out to her to stop, but it was too late. The girl had reached the bridge and at once Peter saw her lose her balance and fall into the water together with her bicycle. When Peter rode up he saw the girl holding on to a pile standing in the water. Without a moment's hesitation he jumped into the water as he wanted to help the girl. The current under the bridge was very strong and Peter had to swim against it. At last he swam up to the pile and saw the girl's frightened eyes looking at him with hope. "Can you swim?" asked Peter, but the girl shook her head. Peter ordered the girl to hold on to his neck and they both started for the bank. It was very difficult for Peter to swim with such a burden and at moments it seemed to him that he could not stand the strain and that they both would be drowned. When they reached the bank, Peter was so tired that he could hardly breathe. When he came to himself he saw the girl looking at him with admiration.  "You are a real hero", she said. "You are the bravest boy I've ever met", and she meant every word she said. And it was at that moment that Peter felt a great confidence in himself. He was afraid of nothing now, he was able to overcome any difficulty and he was ashamed now for the Peter who only a few hours before had been afraid to leave his grandmother and begin a new life.

His Rich Aunt (After Cyril Hare)
Hilary Smith belonged to a good family. Unfortunately he had some troubles with the bank and was sent off to Australia. He didn't like Australia and Australia didn't like him. Therefore he wanted to return to England very much. He could not earn enough money to book his passage. So he had to wait until his father and his brother died. They fortunately did it at the same time. He received all the money that belonged to a good family and soon spent it. When all the money had been spent, Hilary could do one of the things. He could die or work. Neither of these gave him any pleasure. Then he remembered that he had a rich aunt. She was his father's only sister. Hilary found out her address. The old lady was glad to see her only nephew. Unfortunately she was seriously ill. The doctor said that nothing could cure the old lady. Hilary was afraid to remain in the world alone. So he chose the moment when his aunt was feeling much better than usual and asked her about her will. The old woman told her nephew that she had made a will when she was a young girl. She was very religious and left all her money to some religious people in China. She didn't make any other will. The next day Hilary found out that when a woman gets married, an earlier will loses its value. A new will must be made, the money goes to the nearest relative. His future was safe. Hilary needed money very much, he owed a lot to shopkeepers, who trusted him because his aunt was rich. It was impossible for Hilary to speak with his aunt about money. She got very bad and got angry when he spoke about money. One morning she told Hilary that she was going to make a new will. Hilary was afraid that she wanted to leave all her money to somebody else. So he made a decision. Every night his aunt took some medicine to make her sleep. Hilary decided to double the portion. He could put her to sleep forever. He put some more medicine into the glass. His aunt took the glass and looked at Hilary. She thanked her nephew and said:
"If I am alive tomorrow, I shall change the will in your favour. If I die tonight, you will get nothing.''
She explained to her nephew that she had never been married, so her first will did not lose its value. Hilary tried to take the glass away but the old lady raised it and drank.
